Magic Shields Inc.

Final Report

In March 2026, Magic Shields Inc. successfully completed its project conducted at the Tokyo Metropolitan Tama Medical Center.

With the aim of reducing the risk of fall-related injuries among the elderly and alleviating the associated burden on nurses and caregivers, Magic Shields implemented a project utilizing its "Koroyawa Mat Sensor." This innovative product features a mat that remains firm for walking but softens upon impact to reduce injury risk, combined with a built-in sensor that detects falls.

For this project, 80 mat sensors were installed in patient rooms at the Tama Medical Center. A pilot study was conducted where the mat's fall detection function was linked to the nurse call system. In addition, interviews were carried out with the medical center's staff.

The results of the pilot study showed that zero serious incidents* occurred in the areas where the product was installed. Furthermore, the project successfully collected approximately 70,000 instances of detection data. Analysis of this extensive dataset is expected to enable the development of new features, such as highly accurate fall prediction, which will contribute to further reducing the workload on nursing staff.

Moreover, feedback from surveys and interviews with staff highlighted the product's potential for deployment in privacy-sensitive areas like restrooms, where fall detection is crucial but the installation of cameras is challenging.

Leveraging the results of this project, Magic Shields will continue to enhance the sensor's fall detection accuracy and pursue its expansion both domestically and internationally.
